Our Place
Don Barrett
It
is through his word that we learn of our relationship to God and of our place
in God’s Grand Plan.
After dying for our sins, Jesus sent his Spirit to us so that we might approach God with the same assurance that Jesus enjoyed as the Son of God.
Romans 8:14-17 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they re the sons of God. For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father. The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we re the children of God: And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together. (KJV)
Abba is an Aramaic word for “father” used by a child in intimate conversation within the home. When children addressed their father as Abba, they were expressing affection, confidence and loyalty. When Christ prayed “Abba, Father” in Gethsemane (Mark 14:36), he was expressing complete trust in his Father and his willingness to endure the cross in obedience to his Father.
Do we dare claim our inheritance? Do we dare see ourselves as “Sons of God”? To do otherwise is to deny the Spirit within us.
Galatians 4:6,7 Because you are sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, “Abba, Father.” So you are no longer a slave, but a son; and since you are a son, God has made you also an heir. (NIV)
Heavenly Father, help me to allow your Spirit within me to bring out
the “new creature” that I am to be and to live as a “Son of God”.
