Revelations From Our Speech

VVV

Our relationship with God (our heart) is revealed in our speech, our conversation with others, our testimony in this life.

Jesus said that as a tree is known by its fruit, so is our heart known by our words.  By the words from our mouth we will be judged.  (Matthew 12:33-37) We can deceive other people and even ourselves at times but Jesus knows the heart of man.  (Matt. 9:4, Luke 16:15, John 5:42, Acts 1:24, Acts 15:8)

Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.  Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and in your name drive out demons and perform miracles?’ Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you.  Away from me, you evildoers!’ (Matthew 7:21-23 NIV)

Jesus also said that we must remain in him if we are to bear much fruit, without him we can do nothing.  (John 15:5)  The fruit of our Spirit led Christian life comes from our heart and is evidenced in our speech, therefore the fruit listed in Galatians 5:22026 should be the foundation for what comes out of our mouth:

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.  Against such things ther is no law.  Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the sinful nature with its passions and desires.  Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit, Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each other.  (Galatians 5:22-26 NIV)

Through Jesus , therefore, let us continually offer to God a sacrifice of praise – the fruit of lips that confess his name.  And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased. (Hebrews 13:15, 16, NIV)

Heavenly Father, fill my heart with your word, dwell within me so that my speech is continually pleasing in your ears.
